2. Overview

Following the success of the “2018-2019 Global Additive Manufacturing Application Innovation Competition”, the “2020 Global Additive Manufacturing Application Innovation Competition” will continue to be held in 2020 under the theme of IN(3D)NOVATION, focusing on the innovative application and industrialization prospects of 3D printing in key areas. The competition aims to bring the value and innovative ability of 3D printing into full play and enlarge it into practical application. Starting from actual needs, the competition takes design as the guide to stimulate creative and effective 3D printing digitalization (design + materials + process) comprehensive solution. The “Consumption Upgrading -- Creative” of this competition, organized by the organizer in conjunction with the “National Treasure” IP, sends out the competition proposition with the “National Treasure -- Yangshi Lei Model Sample” as the IP to the vast number of designers, colleges, and industrial enterprises. It aims to integrate 3D digital design and 3D printing and molding technology, and create different types of 3D printing of derivative works based on Yangshi Lei model sample, including but not limited to furniture, lamps, jewelry, stationery, cups, ornaments, utensils and other creative products, so as to really experience the culture and spirit represented by Yangshi Lei in our daily life.

4. Introduction on the “National Treasure -- Yangshi Lei Model Sample”

“Yangshi Lei is of historical significance for modern architecture. Seven generations of Lei family had presided over imperial Yangshifang (National Architecture Design Institute) for more than 200 years, which was of a legend. The architecture of a sixth of Chinese world’s heritages, including the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Chengde Mountain Resort, the Temple of Heaven, the East Cemetery, and the West Cemetery, was designed by Lei family.
Yangshi Lei model sample is a high-level 3D modeling. Each part can be disassembled. The beam frame structure of the building, the color painting style of the inner eaves, and even the specific size, are marked clearly. “Model sample” is the greatest contribution of Yangshi Lei. The existence of Yangshi Lei drawings proves that ancient Chinese architecture was never built entirely by the experience of craftsmen. It also suggests the superb architectural design level in ancient China and fills the gap in the study of ancient Chinese architectural history.

In ancient times, this model was mainly made of paper and was ironed to set the paper, so it was called “Model Sample”. Wanfang Anhe is a group of buildings in the Old Summer Palace. The plane layout is in the shape of “卍”, which represents universal peace.

6. Assignment requirements:

Contestants may select materials from the Yangshi Lei model samples above and, from the perspective of understanding such materials (ancient architecture), figure out design clue to form their own interpretations and concepts with cultural connotation and creativity or even the overall design plan, so as to reshape the modern significance of Yangshi Lei model sample. Unlike what we did in the past, the design scheme for the competition needs to be optimized with 3D printing (designed for 3D printing), i.e. the combination of 3D digital design and 3D printing molding process is finally realized to form different types of Yangshi Lei hot sample derivative works, so that the culture and spirit represented by the Yangshi Lei can be inherited and truly entered into the contemporary daily life.

The submitted works include but are not limited to:

1) Derivative product creation: including but not limited to furniture, lamps, jewelry, stationery, cups, ornaments, utensils and other cultural and creative works, reflecting the characteristics of three-dimensional digital design, and realizing one-step molding, small batch production and customization through 3D printing, reflecting the advantages of design diversity, complexity, higher cost performance ratio, and not constrained by traditional manufacturing process;
2) Model creation: realizing the model expression of fine or secondary creation of Yangshi Lei ironing materials through a more optimized 3D printing overall solution (from design, materials to process, etc.), a model that vividly reproduces the original one, or an abstract and reworked model;
3) Exhibition creation: Around the overall display planning and content of the sample lightning, creating an overall display plan completed through 3D printing, transferring the cultural characteristics of the sample lightning, and meeting the characteristics of mobility, modularity and display through the advantages of 3D printing;
4) From the technical point of view: new process realization / solution, new material research and development, software with breakthrough shaping ability, implementation or new equipments for large-scale, or precision process, or multi-color printing, etc.

7. Competition time, submission requirements and evaluation mechanism

1) .The deadline for submission of the competition's works is September 30. The evaluation is divided into online preliminary evaluation and roadshow re evaluation.
The requirements for the submitted works include:
a) description of the scheme itself and performance of the effect diagram (including but not limited to (1) description of the design scheme; (2) description of application scene; and (3) performance of renderings, etc.);
b) 3D printing overall plan (including but not limited to (1) 3D digital model -stl format file; and (2) topology optimization scheme, etc.);
c) instructions for use of materials
d) 3D printing structure aided realization analysis (structure optimization design drawing);
e) Preliminary cost estimation of 3D digital manufacturing;
f) 3D print model file (not mandatory).
Teams entering the final (final) evaluation of roadshow shall submit:

Based on the scheme. The preliminary evaluation starts from the design, focusing on:
(1) Cultural characteristics and connotation mining; (2) originality and uniqueness; (3) innovation ability and scheme integrity of digital design;
(4) art & design sense; (5) 3D printing can be realized
Re (final) comments:
The evaluation is based on the 3D printing object. According to the preliminary evaluation results, 3D printed objects are used for reevaluation (final evaluation) and 10 minutes road show is conducted by the participating teams / individuals. The evaluation panel composed of scientific research experts, industry experts and investment experts will conduct on-site demonstration and selection according to the actual situation of 3D printing and the test report (if any) issued by professional evaluation institutions, and reply according to the questions and in combination with the evaluation standards of this round Ranking of the first, second and third prize of this competition unit. Starting from the actual process, this round of review focuses on:
(1) Manufacturing technology; (2) materials; (3) molding effect; (4) durability; (5) fineness; (6) innovation; (7) cost; (8) market effect, etc.

9. Contestants

domestic and foreign design firms/designers, scientific research institutions, teachers and students of higher learning institutions, design creative institutions or individuals, artists, museum practitioners, relevant enterprises/individuals upstream and downstream of 3D printing, etc.
Teams are encouraged to participate in cross-disciplinary groups. The organizing committee will also assist in professional pairing or providing relevant 3D printing technical support (if required by the contestants).

10. Instructions to contestants

The competition organizing committee recommends 3D printing enterprises to provide technical guidance, support, and 3D printing services (at contestants’ cost) for contestants.

11. Competition reward mechanism

• Cash award will be given to contestants of First Prize (1 group), Second Prize (2 groups), and Third Prize (3 groups) by group/individual;
• According to the comprehensive opinions of the evaluation experts, the Fengtai Park 3D Printing Digital Innovation Center of Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park will reward some of the winners for incubation.
• Winning works will be selected into the list of cultural and creative derivative works to be developed;
• The winning works will be organized by the organizers to participate in major domestic and international exhibitions for extensive exposure.
